Before you build, remodel, or make changes to your food establishment, your plans need to be reviewed and approved by the department. Submitting your plans early helps ensure your project meets health and safety requirements before construction begins. This page explains what to submit, when to submit it, and what to expect during the plan review process.
What Food Licenses Require a Plan Review?
A plan review is required for the following license types before a license can be issued:
- Retail food establishments
- Food service establishments
- Food processing plants
- Mobile food units
When Should I Submit My Plans?
You should submit your plans before starting any construction, remodeling, or alteration of a facility, at the same time you apply for your food license.
What Documents Do I Need to Upload?
On the USA Food Safety website:
- Upload your intended menu.
- Upload your proposed establishment layout. Make sure the site layout is drawn to scale and includes:
- All equipment, including cooking and holding equipment, and warewashing, service, and handwashing sinks;
- Equipment specifications including types, manufacturer, model numbers, locations, dimensions, performance capacities, and installation specifications.
- Plumbing and mechanical drawings and/or schedules showing supply and waste connections;
- Outdoor cooking areas and/or trash areas; and
- Floor, wall, and ceiling finish material and specifications.
Where Should I Upload These Documents?
The documents should be attached on the Facility Maintenance page in the "Attachments" section.
What if I am Remodeling a Facility?
If you are remodeling a facility you already own that is currently licensed:
- Submit only the updated plans.
- Notify your inspector.
How Long Does it Take to Review My Plans?
Once received, the department will review the plans and notify you of the results. Plan reviews usually take 3-4 weeks. There are no additional fees for this process. Incomplete submissions may delay approval.
