Educational Requirements

  • Official transcripts conferring a doctoral degree in psychology from an institution accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools or an equivalent accrediting association or entity in other regions of the U.S., sent directly to the Board office from the college or university.

Note: The psychology program from which the doctoral degree was received must be one of the following:

  • Accredited by the American Psychological Association, OR
  • Accredited by the Canadian Psychological Association, OR
  • Designated by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB)/National Register Designation Project as a doctoral program in psychology, OR
  • The applicant must hold a specialty diploma by examination from the American Board of Professional Psychology.

Please note: Foreign-trained applicants should contact the Board office for educational
requirements.

Supervision Plan Requirements

A completed Supervision Registration Form must be submitted to the Board office before approval to take the EPPP exam will be granted.

Examination Requirements

Passing score on the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP), transmitted directly to the Board office by the exam service.

Supervision Completion Report Requirements

Verification of 1,500 hours of supervised professional experience completed in no less than 10 months meeting the requirements of Iowa Administrative Code 645—240.6.

The supervisor must complete and return the Supervision Report form. 

For New Iowa Applicants Who Have Been Previously Licensed in Another State and are Not Foreign-Trained Psychologists

Submit verification of license held in other state(s)*.

To apply, do one of the following:

Option A:

  • If you have held a license to practice psychology for at least 5 years with no disciplinary history, submit verification of a doctoral degree in psychology.

Option B:

  • Submit verification of a current Certificate of Professional Qualification (CPQ) issued by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards

Option C:

  • Submit passing score on the EPPP national examination, sent directly to the Board office by the exam service or the state of initial licensure
  • Submit proof of current credentialing at the doctoral level as a health service provider in psychology by the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, sent directly from the certifying organization

Option D:

  • Submit passing score on the EPPP national examination, sent directly to the Board office by the exam service or the state of initial licensure
  • Submit proof of Board certification by the American Board of Professional Psychology that was originally granted on or after January 1, 1983, sent directly from the certifying organization

Option E:

Submit the following:

  • Passing score on the EPPP national examination, sent directly to the Board office by the exam service or the state of initial licensure
  • Official transcripts conferring a doctoral degree in psychology from a program that is APA/ CPA accredited, or ASPPB designated, sent directly to the Board office from the college or university
  • Satisfactory evidence of the applicant’s qualifications in writing on the Board’s Supervision Report form, which is available on the Board’s website. If getting the Board’s Supervision Report form completed is not possible, the board may consider submission of documentation from the state where the applicant was originally licensed or equivalent documentation of supervision.


* The license verification must include license issue date, expiration date and any pending or past disciplinary
action. The verification may be printed from another state licensing board’s website if it contains all of the required
information. If web based verification is not available, the verification must be sent directly to the Board office by
the state(s) where the applicant has been licensed, registered, or certified. If the applicant has never been
licensed in another state, ignore this item.
