How Do I Apply for an Electrical License?

Go to: iowaelectrical.gov and click on the bottom orange tab, “Electrical Licensing System”.

1. On the next page, click the words, “New User” on the bottom right.
2. Enter your email address, your first and last name, and your date of birth. After this, click, “Sign Up”.  (If you have never been licensed by the State of Iowa Electrical Examining Board and your information is correct, please click “Yes”.)
3. You will be sent an email with a link to click on to go back into the account. If you do not find it in your inbox, this may be in your spam or junk filter.
4. Login by entering your email address and the password you created.
5. Once that is completed, you are signed into your account.
6. From here you can manage your account.
7. To submit a new application click, “Submit new Application or Renew Existing License”. From here “Complete the Checklist” by answering the questions.
8. You can apply for a NEW license--by Examination if you are required to test, by Apprentice Program if you are currently registered and enrolled, or by Proof of Work Experience for others.
9. Then you should be able to complete all of the steps of the license application and click “Submit”. The application will then be sent to our office for review. If it is accepted, we will send you an email requesting payment. If we need additional information, we will send you an email with what is needed.
10. After submitting the payment, we will send you an email with a copy of the license.
