Apply Online for Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Licensure

The Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board issues specialty licenses for those employed with a private school or college and performing routine maintenance within the scope of employment. Routine maintenance is defined as follows:

“Routine maintenance” means the maintenance, repair, or replacement of existing fixtures or parts of plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, or hydronic systems in which no changes in original design are made. Fixtures or parts do not include smoke and fire dampers or water, gas or steam piping permanent repairs except for traps or strainers. Routine maintenance shall include emergency repairs. “Routine maintenance” does not include the replacement of furnaces, boilers, cooling appliances, or water heaters more than 100 gallons in size.

License Requirements

To apply for a specialty license, an application must be submitted either online or via a paper application.  Requirements for the private school or college routine maintenance specialty license are as follows:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have no record of felony conviction relating to the profession as determined by the board. Applicants with a felony conviction will be subject to review by the board to determine eligibility for licensure.
  • Pay specialty license application fee;
  • Provide evidence that the applicant is employed by a private school or college and is performing routine maintenance within the scope of employment with the private school or college.
