Additional Rate Information
- $1,137.20
The maximum and minimum weekly workers’ compensation rates are calculated using the SAWW determined by Iowa Workforce Development (IWD).
- TTD, HP, PTD, & Death Benefits: $2,274.00
- PPD Benefits: $2,092.00
The maximum weekly rate depends on the type of benefit. An injured employee’s weekly benefit rate is based on 80% of the employee’s weekly spendable earnings but may not exceed the maximum weekly rate at the time of injury.

- PPD, PTD, & Death Benefits: $398.00
The minimum weekly rate depends on the type of benefit. For TTD and HP benefits, it is an amount equal to either 35% of the SAWW or the injured employee’s spendable earnings. For PPD, PTD, and death benefits, it is an amount equal to 35% of the SAWW.
Greater of $1,592.08 or Amount Equal to Compensation the Worker Would Be Paid If Injured in Normal Course of Regular Employment
- $1,592.08 or Weekly Rate Based on Earnings as Official
The official may choose either the weekly benefit rate based on the official’s weekly earnings as an official or an amount equal to 140% of the SAWW.
- $0.67 Per Mile
For mileage incidental to the use of a private auto to travel for care, the per-mile rate is the rate allowed by the federal Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for the business standard mileage rate in effect on July 1 of each year.
Compensation
An injured worker receives weekly workers’ comp benefits while they remain eligible.
To calculate an injured worker's weekly workers’ comp benefit rate:
- Determine the employee’s average gross weekly earnings, rounding to the nearest dollar.
- Determine the maximum number of exemptions for actual dependency, blindness, and old age.
- Determine how many days in the week an employee is eligible for workers’ comp benefits.
The basis of compensation is the injured worker's gross weekly earnings at the time of the injury. This includes recurring payments before any authorized or lawfully required deductions or withholdings. It excludes all the following:
- Irregular bonuses
- Retroactive pay
- Overtime pay
- Penalty pay
- Reimbursement of expenses
The law provides various methods for computing an injured worker's gross weekly earnings. It depends on factors such as payment frequency and employee classification.
WCD calculates the weekly benefit rate based on a seven-day calendar week. To get the daily benefit, multiply the worker's weekly compensation benefit rate by the decimal equivalents of the number of days.
WCD determines the statewide average weekly wage each year, effective from July 1 to June 30 of the following year.

WCD adjusts the maximum and minimum weekly benefit rates for various types of workers' comp benefits each year. These rates depend on the type of benefit and the employee's gross weekly earnings.
The maximum weekly benefit rate is based on 80% of the worker's weekly spendable earnings. It cannot exceed the maximum allowable weekly rate at the time of the injury.
The minimum weekly benefit rate for TTD or HP benefits is determined based on either 35% of the statewide average weekly wage or the employee's spendable weekly earnings, whichever is less.
WCD determines the maximum and minimum weekly benefit rates each year, effective from July 1 to June 30 of the following year.
