DIAL’s Workers’ Compensation Division (WCD):

  • Administers the workers' compensation system and
  • Serves as the neutral body for resolving workers’ comp disputes.

Legal Advice

WCD cannot provide legal advice or referrals to private attorneys. It is a neutral body that decides workers' comp disputes. Contact an attorney to learn about an employer's rights and responsibilities under Iowa law.

File a Report

Employer's should file all reports of injury or illness online using the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).

Covered Entities

Employers, insurance carriers, and third party administrators must follow work comp reporting requirements. Iowa workers' comp law may cover the entity if they:

  • Have employees who work in Iowa
  • Conduct business in Iowa
  • Are organized under Iowa law (e.g., Iowa corporations, partnerships, companies, sole proprietorships, etc.)
  • Adjust Iowa workers' compensation claims

Types of Reports

Failure to Report

WCD may send a demand letter to employers who do not provide needed information or reports. The letter gives the employer 30 days to provide the required information. If the employer still doesn't comply, WCD may hold head. At the hearing, the employer must explain why they did not provide the required information. Failure to show a good reason or to comply could lead to a penalty from WCD, which they can enforce in court.

The insurance carrier should file the needed report if they have the necessary information.

Right to Inspect

WCD can has the right to inspect documents that show how much an employer pays in wages. This helps WCD enforce Iowa's workers' compensation law.
