Pharmacists in charge (PICs) of Iowa-licensed nonresident pharmacies who are not licensed to practice in Iowa must register with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy. This registration ensures accountability and compliance with Iowa’s pharmacy laws. PICs must also complete a training course, report changes to the Board, and renew their registration each year. This guide outlines the requirements, responsibilities, and important deadlines for nonresident PICs.

Summary

Registration

The PIC must be named on the nonresident pharmacy’s license application or renewal, as required by Iowa Code 155A.13A(2). In addition, the PIC must comply with all relevant rules under 481 Iowa Administrative Code Chapters 550–557.

Before applying, pharmacists should review all state laws and rules related to pharmacy practice and PIC responsibilities in Iowa.

An individual who needs to obtain Iowa NRP PIC registration to serve as the PIC for a currently licensed NRP must complete and submit pages 8 - 9 of the Resident and Nonresident Pharmacy Application.
