Pharmacist-interns play a critical role in the development of the pharmacy workforce in Iowa. The Iowa Board of Pharmacy oversees intern registration to ensure all participants meet the necessary education, training, and legal standards. Whether you're a student, graduate, or foreign pharmacy candidate, registration as a pharmacist-intern is an essential step toward licensure and practice.

Who Should Register

  1. Students enrolled in an ACPE-accredited pharmacy program in Iowa.
  2. Students from out-of-state ACPE-accredited programs seeking internship experience in Iowa.
  3. Graduates seeking licensure in Iowa or completing a fellowship/residency in the state.

Registration Process

Step 1: Complete the Application

  • Submit an online or paper Pharmacist-Intern Application. This applies to:
    • U.S. pharmacy students who have never been registered in Iowa
    • Graduates completing a residency or fellowship in Iowa
    • Foreign pharmacy graduates seeking licensure in Iowa

Step 2: Submit Certificate of Eligibility

  • Send the Certificate of Eligibility form to your school of pharmacy. The school must mail the completed form directly to:

  • Foreign pharmacy graduates must be certified by NABP's Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC).

Preceptor Requirements

  • Must be a licensed pharmacist in good standing in the state of internship
  • Responsible for the intern’s work and for submitting affidavits certifying dates and hours of non-academic internship experiences

Foreign Pharmacy Graduates

  • Must register as interns with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy
  • No internship credit is granted until registration is issued
  • Must earn at least 1,500 hours in a U.S. pharmacy or board-approved setting, covering community, institutional, and clinical practice
  • Submit notarized affidavits to certify all internship hours
  • Candidates shall have completed the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) requirements through NABP

Notifications to the Board

  • Must report any changes in name, address, or email within 30 days
  • Update contact info via your online profile
  • Submit legal documentation for name changes using the Board's Name Change Notification Form
