Iowa pharmacies can receive payment for giving out DisposeRx® or other approved drug disposal kits to patients who may be at risk of misusing opioids or other controlled substances.
All Iowa residents can receive two free disposal kits every 30 days. Patients do not pay anything. Pharmacies receive $7.50 per kit for providing the kit and educating the patient. This amount covers both the kit and the pharmacist’s clinical time to decide if a kit is needed.
Pharmacies do not need a prescription to provide a kit. To submit a claim, pharmacies can create a prescription using the product’s NDC and list the pharmacy or pharmacist as the prescriber. You can find billing details, including the BIN and PCN, in the FAQs below.
We encourage all Iowa pharmacies to join the Disposal Kit Program, even if they do not participate in the Naloxone Dispensing Program.
To enroll, email the Iowa Prescription Monitoring Program at pmp@iowa.gov. You’ll receive a welcome kit and more program information.
