Certified pharmacy technicians (CPhTs) play an essential role in supporting pharmacists and delivering safe, efficient pharmacy services. In Iowa, pharmacy technicians must be registered with DIAL and maintain active national certification to work in the secured pharmacy area.

Pharmacy support staff play a key role in ensuring safe and efficient operations, but their duties are limited by law and must be performed under specific conditions.

  • CPhTs can:
    • Assist pharmacists with technical and nontechnical tasks
    • Work under direct pharmacist supervision, except under specific rules (481 IAC Chapter 552)
    • Certain minimum training and experience hours are required prior to working in a telepharmacy site
  • CPhTs cannot:
    • Provide final prescription verification, except under approved programs
    • Counsel patients
    • Make judgment-based decisions
    • Transfer controlled prescriptions
