Building Code Bureau
The bureau is responsible for reviewing building plans for adult day service, assisted living, and residential care facilities, as well as elder group homes, facilities owned by the State or State agencies, or new buildings that use State funding.Additionally, the bureau handles:
Aboveground storage tank registrations and plan reviews
Alarm system contractor and technician licensing
Fire protection system contractor and technician licensing
Electrical Bureau
The bureau oversees licensing, permitting, and education for electricians. Additionally, bureau inspectors conduct electrical inspections for all new electrical installations throughout Iowa, including disaster areas, with the exception of political subdivisions that have their own inspection departments.Elevator, Boiler, & Amusement Ride Bureau
The bureau enforces safety codes for:Elevators, escalators, and other conveyances
Boilers and pressure vessels
Amusement rides and concession booths
Environmental Health & Contractor Bureau
The Environmental Health and Contractor Bureau manages licensing and permitting activities primarily related to environmental health in construction and other areas, such as:Asbestos
Contractor registration
Lead professional certification
Migrant labor camps
Plumbing and mechanical systems
Swimming pools and spas
Tanning
Tattoo
Additionally, there are five boards that govern some of the trades that the Building and Construction Division oversees:

Electrical Examining Board
Elevator Safety Board
Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board
