Beginning January 1, 2020, unless exempted by Code or the Board of Pharmacy, all prescriptions must be transmitted to pharmacies as an electronic prescription.

The Board of Pharmacy has extended the deadline to submit a petition for exemption from the mandate to transmit prescriptions electronically from Tuesday, October 1, 2019 to Friday, October 18, 2019.

Only completed petition requests will be considered for exemption. Please note that this mandate does not require providers to implement an electronic health record (EHR) system. 

The Board of Pharmacy strongly encourages practitioners and pharmacies to review the information provided on its website before contacting the Board.

Petitions received by the October 18, 2019 deadline will be reviewed during the open session of the November 6, 2019 Board meeting.  Prior to the meeting, petitioners will receive email communication from the Board confirming receipt of the petition and will be provided information about attending the meeting in person or via phone.

Practitioners and pharmacies may submit petitions at any time after the October 18, 2019 deadline for consideration at the next available Board meeting.  Note that any petitions received after October 18, 2019 will not be reviewed prior to the January 1, 2020, effective date of the law.  Petitions granted after January 1, 2020, will not be effective until the date granted and will not be retroactive.
