The Iowa Board of Pharmacy, in collaboration with Dr. Caitlin Pedati, medical director and state epidemiologist with the Iowa Department of Public Health, has developed statewide protocols for pharmacist ordering and dispensing of naloxone and nicotine replacement tobacco cessation products as well as pharmacist ordering and administering of immunizations. The statewide protocols authorize the pharmacist to assess the patient, under the parameters of the protocol, for the appropriateness of the product to be dispensed or administered to the patient and issue a prescription order with the pharmacist as the ordering practitioner. The statewide protocols have been finalized, but are not eligible for participation until the Board’s rules have become effective. The rules are anticipated to be effective April 5, 2019, if approved by the Administrative Rules Review Committee, a committee of Iowa legislators tasked with reviewing all administrative rules. An additional press release will be issued when the rules have been made effective. Pharmacists may review the statewide protocols here and the proposed rules here to obtain the required continuing education, training, and materials to be prepared to participate in the statewide protocols upon their official release.
