December has been designated National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.  In issuing his proclamation, President Obama asked all Americans to "recommit to preventing tragedy before it strikes by ensuring our family members and friends stay safe, sober, and drug-free on the road."

In light of this, the Iowa Board of Pharmacy would like to remind its licensees and registrants that counseling is required on all new prescriptions. The Board leaves topics to be considered during consultation up to the pharmacist's professional judgment. However, the Board would like to stress the importance of counseling patients on medications which may impair one's ability to safely drive or operate machinery.
